The British Virgin Islands – Natures best Kept Secret
What happens when steady trade winds meet an island-flecked channel with tame currents and hundreds of protected, salt-rimmed bays? Every mariner worth his sea salt sails here – which is how the British Virgin Islands (BVIs) became such a sailing fantasyland. With more than 40 islands bobbing in a group not more than an hours sail away from each other, the BVI’s have become one of the Worlds top sailing destinations. These prestine waters and amazing beaches welcome visitors every season with warm sunny skies and cool trade wind breezes.
The British Virgin Islands are sprinkled out around Tortola, the BVI’s capital. Some of these Islands are uninhabited, some with just a beach bar, some with shipwrecks to dive on, some with parts of them still unexplored, every island has something unique, something for everyone and something worth seeing. The only thing is you’ll need your own boat to reach them, but since the BVIs are the world’s charter-boat capital you’re in luck and can experience the BVI’s on board Liberte’ Charters!
Liberte’ works throughout the BVI’s and visits nearly all the Islands, namely: Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, Norman, Virgin Gorda, Peter and Anegada. Your charter starts in Tortola, and depending on the weather and the wind we sail either anti-clockwise or clockwise around Tortola visiting the various Islands with day stops at snorkel spots and beaches and overnight stops in quiet secluded bays.
The BVI’s
Tortola
Tortola, the capital of the BVI’s, holds most of the population and commerce, and its demeanor is a little bit stern as a result. That doesn’t mean it won’t let its hair down at a full-moon party or out in Cane Bay windsurfing.
Among Tortola’s sharp peaks and bougainvillea-clad hillsides you’ll find a mash-up of play places. Guesthouses and mountain villas mingle with beachside resorts. Bon Appetite cooks make local Island dishes at beachside barbecues, and local bands play through the night while the Tortolan rum flows and makes anyone forget about the real world.
Frenchmans Cay
Tortola is the ferry and air hub of the BVI’s and is the entrance and exit point of your charter. On arrival in Frenchmans Cay, Liberte’s home, you can experience a full day of Island exploring and beach combing or just relax on board. Top the day off with cocktails and a local lobster dinner at one of the top oceanside restaurants. Our local driver will even take you to the highest point in the BVI’s to get a better view of where your week of charter will be taking you.
Bomba Shack
Enjoy a surf at Josiahs Bay, a secluded local spot accessible by 4×4. This pristine, almost untouched beach has some great surf and a cold beer waiting for you at the local beach bar. Another must do event on the Island is the monthly mushroom-tea fueled full moon party that is celebrated on two sides of the Island, the favorite party always hosted by Bomba at the Bomba Shack.
Virgin Gorda
The BVIs’ gem, beloved by movie stars, millionaires and yachties. Somehow she’s maintained her innocence, with a clutch of exceptional beauty and peacefulness Virgin Gorda never ceases to amaze any of our guests, even Liberte’ crew who has visited the Island numerous times are still taken aback by the absolute prisitine beauty of this majestic paradise.
It’s certainly a testament to Virgin Gorda’s awesomeness that a billionaire such as Richard Branson – who could live anywhere in the world – chooses this little patch of earth. Of course, it should be noted he’s not actually on Virgin Gorda, but has his very own personal island right offshore called Necker Island. But you getthe point.
Virgin Gorda, provides an ideal blend of extraordinary sights, easy access, good restaurants and somehow no rampant commercialism.
There is lots to see here, a day trip to the famous granite formations called the Baths is always a catch, Liberte’ chef packs a picnic basket and off you go along the Island’s ridge by taxi to white beaches surrounded by breathtakingly huge granite boulders and palm trees. Spend the day exploring the small caves and rock pools or just chill and sunbath on the pure white beaches.
Virgin Gorda Sound, where Liberte’ anchors for the night, provides the perfect spot for watersports. Let Liberte’ crew take you skiing, wake-boarding, tubing, fishing, kyaking or snorkeling anything that takes your fancy. After a great day at the Baths and on the water, spend the evening at the Leverick Bay beach barbecue and party the night away with local reggae bands and thefamous Mocco Jumbies (the Virgin Gorda stilt dancers).
Jost Van Dyke
Jost (pronounced ‘yoast’) is a little island with a big personality. It may only take up 4 sq miles of teal-blue sea, but its good-time reputation has spread thousands of miles beyond. Jost van Dyke is a jovial island, where a man named Foxy is king and ‘time flies when you ain’t doin’ shit, ‘ as the T-shirts proclaim.
For over 400 years Jost has been an oasis for seafarers and adventurers. A Dutch pirate (the island’s namesake) used the island as a base in the 17th century. In the 18th century it became a homestead for Quakers escaping religious tyranny in England.
In the late 1960s free-spirited boaters found Jost’s unspoiled shores, and Foxy built a bar to greet them. The tide ebbed and flowed for a quarter century, and not much changed. Electricity arrived in 1991 and roads were cut a few years later.
Though locals now all have cell phones and websites, and Jost is no secret to yachters and glitterati (Jimmy Buffet and Keith Richards stop by), the island’s green hills and blinding beaches remain untrammeled by development. As one local says, ‘When Main Street is still a beach, you know life is good.’ Hear, hear!
Liberte’ stops at Jost Van Dyke for the day and night, experience the famous Foxy’s bar and the Soggy Dollar bar, named so because one can swim to the bar from the boat and all your dollars get wet. Spend the day snorkeling and beach combing, or take a sundowner basket with snacks and champagne and enjoy the sunset at the Bubbly Pools, there is so much to do and so much time to do nothing, a visit to this untouched piece of the BVI’s will make you feel 10 years younger.
Norman Island
Legend plays a large part in the history of Norman Island with tales of pirates and treasure caves, although the role of the island as the model for the epic “Treasure Island” by Robert Louis Stevenson is perhaps the most famous legend of all. Whilethe island is now uninhabited, farmers have in the past reared cattle there and today the Caves are one of the most popular tourist attractions in the islands. The coast line comprises a number of bays and offshore reefs providing excellent snorkeling and diving within proximity to the island. The Bight, the bay where Liberte’ anchors for the night is well protected and provides another great spot for watersports and snorkeling. Just around the corner you can find the Norman Island “caves”, a perfect spot for snorkeling. Venture out on the Liberte’ dinghy to the Indians, another fantastic snorkeling spot, perfect for seeing all types of corals and underwater species.
Finish the day off with relaxing sundowners on board Liberte’ or take a quick ride over to the Willy-T bar for a crazy sunset party…
Peter Island This wonderful tropical paradise covers some 1,800 acres and the entire island is a private resort with five white sandy beaches and twenty secluded coves.
Peter Island was first established as a resort in the late sixties and Peter has recently undergone extensive renovations. This private island is home to the Peter Island Resort, Liberte’ anchors in a secluded bay around the corner from the resort.
Peter Island has an interesting folklore history where the famous pirate Blackbeard supposedly abandoned some of his crew to their death on Dead Chest Island. The men were washed up in Deadmans Bay which is now the main resort beach.
Deadmans Bay
Enjoy a short hike to the incrediblly beautiful Deadmans Bay beach, and spend the day lounging or enjoy a short walk over the ridge for a magnificent view of palm tree forests and coral bleached bays on the windward side of the Island.
The road to the Day Spa
Peter Island also has a top class Day Spa, so if you feel like relaxing with a full body massage this is the place to do it. The Day Spa looks over a beautiful bright blue coral covered bay and faces the constant cool sea breeze, what better place to fully unwind and enjoy a massage.
The Island provides some fantastic snorkeling and waterports, rent a wind surfer, or spend the day fishing. On Liberte’ the choice is yours!
Anegada
The island takes its name from the Spanish word for ‘drowned’ or ‘flooded, ‘ and that’s what it did to more than 300 ships in the early years – it sunk ‘em. The island is so low (28ft above sea level at its highest) that mariners couldn’t see it to get their bearings until they were trapped in the surrounding coral maze known as Horseshoe Reef.
Anegada floats on a remote reef, a short sail north of from Virgin Gorda. The Island has large salt ponds rife with flamingos, blooming cacti and giant rock iguanas. You can dive on many of the shipwrecks, or snorkel from ridiculously blue-watered beaches such as Loblolly Bay and Flash of Beauty. If you’re looking to get away from it all, this atoll has a hammock waiting.
Liberte’ anchors in the shallows and its a dinghy ride into the main anchorage, we tie up alongside the only wooden dock in the bay, and enjoy a taxi ride to some of the best beaches in the Caribbean. Afterwards there is always an option to stay ashore for some local lobster dinner and enjoy the sunset from your hammock.
Anegada is not easy to explain in words, its an Island that takes your breath away and makes you ponder whether there is really any other place like it.
