Welcome to the Select Yachts Fleet!!!

Take the helm!

Coral of Cowes, built 1902, a real stunner...man I hope I look that good at her age!!

Select Yachts has been getting some amazing new yachts to promote for charter lately. I mean, really, WOW, amazing!
We are so very happy to welcome the magnificent schooner CORAL OF COWES. The owner is a well know charter skipper who has found some great crew until he can come back on board maybe in a few years..you know R.O from E.M…I never knew he had the Classics Sailing Yacht bug…maybe just blindsided by beauty…can’t blame him…
Anyway, we will send a flyer around for some of the other new listings, believe it or not we have a bigger classic coming…I MEAN BIG…so stand by…
meanwhile, for a few more shots of Coral click here, we have her on our site and should have her on the Worldwide Charter Agents sites soon. Coral is presently lying in Grenada and is available NOW for photo shoots and ready to start her term charter life as of mid November. She has already gotten a few booking scheduled just by word of mouth so call ASAP to secure your dates!

Yacht Charters – Comparing Price to Value

How Do I Choose for my next Yacht Charter?

Ever wonder why charter rates on vessels seem to vary so much even if they appear to be the same size?

Here are some points to consider when looking to charter:

  • SIZE – A posted length of a yacht is important but not always the most telling factor to true size. Recent developments have resulted in a larger beam in some of the newer design for both sail and power.  Older boats tend to be narrower, though not always the case. Even if you look at the beam of a boat that is posted, note if it carries the width of the beam aft or if it flares in the middle. Does it have “walkaround” decks or is the cabin  the width of the vessel? How much is interior or on deck space? A “trideck” motor yacht with an enclosed sky lounge gives different interior space than one with a sundeck only. Note that in power yachts, some of the newer designs with planing hulls have less interior space, the sleek effect looks great, the speed is great but the cabins will be smaller than some of the “good ole gals” posting the same length.

Now you get the picture…this is just one factor…How about …

  • AGE OF THE VESSEL  – pretty obvious, but keep in mind that an older vessel may have undergone extensive refitting and tweaking and essentially have all the same amenities and services as a new yacht, sometimes even more and better!
  • CHARTER HISTORY – let’s face it, experience counts for a lot. A very caring owner that is serious about having his yacht charter and do it well will provide the best toys, crews, availability, and creature comforts, as well as a high level of maintenance and compliance to all safety regulations.
  • MAINTAINENCE – Hard to discern from a boat’s brochure…a very good reason to use a professional yacht charter broker. A good broker will visit as many yachts as possible at boat shows, the difference in what is visible is pretty staggering; not all yachts look the same as when the brochure was photographed! A keen nose is crucial. I know a very good lady broker who, upon walking onto a yacht, asks to see the engine room. If it is not impeccable she walks off … Further to that, knowing the Captain, engineer, owner etc can put one’s mind to rest.
  • Meeting the Captain on board

It's great to meet the crew on board

  • CREW – Crucial. Make or break a charter…A great crew that have all the requisite skills as well as how to optimize your vacation with the right attitude and service level are the true heart and soul of the occasion. I had a client who insisted to me for his charter that the age and size of the boat were all he cared about. I put him on a yacht to his specs with great crew as well…at the end of the charter he said “the crew is the really important thing to making the charter great!”. Lesson learned.
  • Some Yachts Feature Amazing Food on Charter

Swiss Raclette on SV Good Fortune

Captain Thomas Treuche jumps in to make his special Raclette on Good Fortune

    Chef Elizabeth Lee's wonderful salad

Have your Nicoise "stacked" by chef Elizabeth Lee on SY Wonderful

It can be just amazing what can come out of a yacht’s tiny (or not so tiny) galley!
On a crewed yacht charter, you may be served some incredible meals by great chefs…here are a few of note:

    Freelance chef Luc Juan appetizer
If you are lucky you will have chef Luc Juan filling in for your charter!

Captain Thomas Treuch went to cooking school along with mate/chef Brigitte to ensure the food would be doubly good. Here he is with his Swiss Raclette feast.

Chef Elizabeth Lee on Catamaran Wonderful never ceases to amaze with her contemporary cuisine…her new cookbook should be out soon, watch for it!

Sometimes we need a replacement chef or a special chef – Luc Juan has been “freelancing” on yachts for years. He is especially good with pastries – he taught at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and has cooked for some amazing people! He is always ready to jump on board once he gets the call – his food is super!

Yachts Priced in US Dollars are a Great Value!

    Sailing Yacht Croatia

Tillymint in Croatia $15,500/2 pax; $21,750/6 pax with half board package!

Having just spent a bit of time in Europe looking at charter yachts has put a big sign in front of my eyes – WOW, yacht charter in the Americas is sure a great value! With the exchange rate of USD to Euro putting a 50% surcharge on things, now is a great time for Europeans (and Americans and Canadians etc) to consider a visit to “The Colonies”. Besides the Caribbean there is New England and The Bahamas…all priced in affordable USD!
And, OK, for those who really want to go to Europe this summer, I have a few tricks up my sleeve, look at 115′ M/V Harmony, 88′ M/V Essence, 73′ Catamaran Wonderful, and the beautiful 67′ S/V Tillymint, they are all scattered about the Med and priced in USD!!!!

    Canal Barge Experience

The Burgundy Canal from the bow of Savoir Vivre

    A Burgundy Canal Barge Adventure

Got a call from Jim K, an ex-fleet owner with an invite for my husband Jackson and me to come as guests on a Hotel Barge cruise through Burgundy…Of Course we said YES!
I had always called it a Canal Barge Cruise but it seems the proper term is “Hotel” Barge. This is actually a realistic term; it was surely a moving Hotel. Having spent close to 30 years on sailing yachts and motor yachts in the Caribbean, Mediterranean and various open water locales, it was pretty amazing to be totally landlocked in the French country side…and on a BOAT! Lots to see… cows and castles… Lots to eat… Pates and Quiches… Lots to tour… antique villages, museums and vineyards. Going down…locks, locks, locks.
I have to admit, I really missed the luxury of jumping off the side of the boat into the clear blue ocean waters, but we got our exercise walking or biking along the path beside the canal or doing the daily tours. Canal water is GREEN…and usually opaque. One day we could see into the water and the fish were really thick! And I thought those French farmers were sitting along the banks with fishing poles as an excuse to get away from their wives … Continue reading

Greece – A Great Place for Luxury Charters!

    Catamaran Anassa

Catamaran Anassa - a sweet ride!

Sights were many at the Poros show in Greece

As Charter Brokers we have the good fortune to not only go to industry Charter Expositions and Boat shows, but we sometimes get to do “Fam trips” (short for familiarization trips) as well! After two hard weeks of touring yachts at both the MYBA Genoa show and the Poros Greek show, Ann E (that’s me!) had the great opportunity to spend a few days cruising some Greek Isles.

The trip took place on the clean and hospitable 62′ sailing catamaran Anassas under the gentle guidance of Captain Jiorgos (George) Kourtelis and his crew of Takis the prolific chef and Tilak the quiet and steady mate. We visited Hydra and Aegina before I had to tear myself away to catch my flight out of Athens. All I have to say about that is it was not enough, I want to cruise Greece for a whole summer! The people there are so warm and friendly and the yachts were absolutely fabulous… I’LL BE BACK!!!

Meanwhile, if any of you are lucky enough to still arrange a charter please give us a call, the boats are fresh in my mind and I can wholeheartedly recommend Greece as a top place to go this summer – and early Fall, which is really one of the best times!
