Croatia - The Dalmation Coast
Jacques Cousteau once wrote that the most beautiful body of water as he knew it is the Adriatic Sea. As the new "must see" spot, all traces of a bitter war are now gone and tourism is beginning to flourish once again in the island and coastal villages. Fly into Split airport and meet your yacht in the UNESCO village of Trogir. This medieval village on a tiny islet has limestone streets polished by a millennium of people strolling the alleys and shops. Heading north, stop at Pazanini for a quick swim then to Primasten. Next stop, Sibenik. The famous Cathedral from the 1600's has the carved heads of the townsfolk in all sorts of poses and expressions, a must see! Krka National Park and the falls are nearby, a great place for a hike and swim. Further north are the Cornati Islands. This multitude of isles provides great scenery while under way. A favorite, Dugi Otok (Otok means island) features a freshwater lake sitting above sea level and incredible views from cliffs dropping off into the sea. More favorites are Vis with both a blue and a green grotto, and the party town of Hvar. A stunning view is had from the walk to the fort at the top. Jump in the harbor, you can see the bottom at 40 feet in this clear clean water. Having celebrated its 1500-year anniversary recently, Korchula is a jewel of a village on a round peninsula. If lucky, you might catch a reenactment of the capture of Marco Polo, the town's favorite son. Further on to the island of Mljet, where ancient Roman ruins stand sentry at the anchorage. A National Park features a lake and Monastery. Next stop Dubrovnik, with a walk atop the city walls, red tile roofs galore, granite stone walkways, and welcoming and hospitable people. Five miles south gets you to quaint Cavtat, a quiet village on a pristine harbour, the airport is just nearby. If you have an extra day or two before departure, head to Montenegro, Yugoslavia, where you can cruise up the only fiord in the Mediterranean, and spend the night in the ancient little town of Kotor.
